The English Teacher

An English teacher at Hermiston High School, that is who my mom, Kathryn Podlesnik, is. English is one of my best subjects and I wanted to learn more about the job life of an English teacher. Although I don’t want to be a teacher, I am still interested. Her average day is her getting to school, then having a college class, next she has two classes that are the same thing, after that she has her lunch, later is yet again another one of the same classes, next is prep, and lastly is one more of the same classes. Before becoming a teacher Kathryn Podlesnik worked for a vehicle repossession company, and did the office work. She had some help becoming a teacher. She was inspired by her past teachers and she feels as if she can relate to her students . Kat then states, “If I can get paid for what I love why wouldn't I do it?”. My mom. Kathryn, is in her fourth year of teaching, and in ten more years plans to still be teaching but more involved because she hopefully will live in Hermiston.

Mrs.Podlesnik loves her students, the people she works with, and the feeling like she is doing something important. In her opinion the downsides are not having enough time to do her work as well as she would like to. Kathryn has many co-workers that she enjoys because they all have different teaching styles that she can learn from.
Kathryn says that her job does of course get hard at times just like any other job. Her job gets hard on her because there are a lot of demands to keep up with and ultimately her family comes first. Money, that’s why nearly everyone works. As a teacher Mrs.Podlesnik of course doesn’t have the greatest salary in the world. She believes that her profession should get a higher salary because as a teacher her job is under appreciated and the demands have gotten higher. Although she has three months off from work that does not mean that she is not working.
Throughout the four years of her teaching she has used her oldest daughter, me, to help correct work that I can correct for her. She really appreciates it because it helps her get work done. She also tries to get her family more involved in school events. She tells her family all about work everyday at the dinner table. I learned a lot more about my mother’s job and what it is like to be a teacher. This interview showed me that students should appreciate their teachers more because we may not realize it but they are constantly work all throughout the year.
