Amazing talents can start from something simple like playing with your parent's 35mm camera at the age of 6, then upgrading to your own, first polaroid instant camera at the age of 10, or taking classes all through high school and taking on any opportunity you get to help fulfill your career. Little things like that can lead to incredible talents and a huge future in photography. This is pretty much how it all started for the marvelous Whitney Minthorn III.
His success started with going to college at the American Indians Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico from 2009 to 2013, and going to Cambridge Regional College in Cambridge, England in 2010. Sketching, drawing, art classes, museums, and galleries played a huge role in the success of his photography. When he attended Cambridge Regional College he studied fashion and textiles for one year. He took every opportunity that came his way, and he was able to travel throughout Europe and go sightseeing and museum hopping. During his travels he went to The Louvre Museum in Paris which was his favorite place and what is the world's largest museum and a historic monument. It is also home of the famous Mona Lisa painting. He spent hours looking at the paintings created by the great masters and believes that these paintings are what any photographer should truly study if they want to understand color, composition, and styling. If one wanted to be a photographer when they are older he suggests searching for photography camps, classes, projects and to take on every opportunity you can find. He also suggests watching YouTube videos, buy magazines, study images and read lots of books, much like he did to get to where he is today.
Being a successful photographer has many different aspects like equipment, lighting, and most importantly money. Without money it would be pretty hard to be a photographer, unless of course, you got scholarships, or money awards for good work. Money is very useful because photography can be very expensive, especially if you chose to do studio portrait photography like he does, where you have to invest in lighting equipment. Also with that being said, he himself has received thousand of dollars in awards for his good photography. Whitney personally enjoys taking beauty and portrait photography. With this he believes that lighting and style are pretty much everything in taking a good photo. He shoots with a Nikon d800, which is known for its very high image resolution and large sensor which is useful for very large oversized prints and web. He tells me that the lens is actually the most important part of the camera and it usually doesn’t matter what kind of camera it is.
Whitney sees beauty in everything and he wants to capture it and share it with the world. He enjoys the process of creating a perfect photograph. Hearing peoples comments, whether they be positive or negative, always make him happy because he knows his work is effective, and in my mind his work is very effective to me. His work is very inspiring and beautiful. With his amazing work, I am definitely looking forward to my future in photography as soon as I get the chance to, because of the inspiration of his love for photography.
