A Teacher and a Coach

Mr. Curtis is a science teacher at Sunridge Middle School. On Friday the 5th I interviewed him on being a basketball coach. The reason I chose to interview him is I like how he coaches and I would someday like to be a coach of some sport. He has been coaching for over 30 years and coached boys and girls. The reason he started coaching is he likes working with kids as he is also a teacher. He likes coaching because gets to see a different perspective of the kids he coaches and teaches.Trying out and all the small jobs are also very important to like getting the med kits and balls.
Mr. Curtis said that there are also small jobs that go into coaching. He said that to coach any sport you need knowledge about the sport whether it be football or cross country etc.... Preparing for the sport is key, so you have to know what you are doing and when. Planing your practice is very important because without practice you don’t get better. Mr. Curtis has been coaching for over thirty years and has coached boys and girls. He enjoys both boys and girls, unlike most coaches he doesn’t favor one over the other. But he did say that he is more blunt with the boys and not as blunt with the girls, and that middle school sports is different than high school or youth sports. Preparing for the sport is very crucial. Mr. Curtis said that preparing for sports and tryouts depends on the sport. He said that basketball tryouts are based on the basics, dribbling and passing ect... . He also said kids don’t need to be discouraged because they make C team, that some people need to mature and grow, Micheal Jordan did not make his middle school basketball team at all and grew to be the one of the best basketball players in the world. Attitude, teamwork and conditioning all are also parts of sports.
Team is a term that means a number of people associated in some joint way. Mr. Curtis said that to strengthen your team attitude and work you encourage your kids win or lose, wipe it off and play your best no matter what. He said that he treats all kids equally and fairly, also that the kids do what the coaches say not the what the parents say. Mr. Curtis said teaching the kids he coaches also has expectations on the court and in class. He expects that class work always comes first then the court. He expects good charecter and respect on the court and the field. Conditioning is also important, Mr. Curtis said that he incorporates strengthening and conditioning in drills, sprints, practice, and plays. With all the components of coaching put together you can have a great team and coaches.
So now what? With what I have learned I think that coaching a team of any sport is definitely in my future. I have learned that coaching can be time consuming and fun with the right components and tools you can have a great team and philosophy as a coach. In conclusion I believe that Mr. Curtis is a great teacher and coach and can be looked up to. I would like to thank Mr. Curtis for letting me interview him and for being a great teacher.
