Have you wanted to climb to high up places? Here are some places you can: First, Smith Rocks Oregon is a world famous place to go rock climbing with hundreds of routes located near Bend, Oregon. Second, Leavenworth, Washington is a small German themed town with many different routes ranging from beginner to expert. Third, Spring Mountain a mountain located about 10 minutes away from La Grande. It has a rock wall face with over a hundred routes. Finally, Yosemite National Park located in California has thousands of routes that are very long, ranging from 1500 feet to over 3000 feet.

  1. Gear

You will need a rope. The two most common widths are 9mm and 11mm. I use a rope with a 9mm width. Now that you have a rope you will need some type of belay system; there are many different types belay system with the most common being an atc and a grigory. I prefer a grigory over the atc because if you mess up and don't brake the person falls, but the grigory brakes for you and atc cannot do that. You will need lots of carabiners; there are two different types. Locking and non-locking, locking are mostly used for anchors and harnesses but non-locking are used for holding items on your harness. Two good brands are Black Diamond and Camp. The type of harness you will need is a harness that goes around your waist and not a full body harness, Black Diamond and Marmot are my personal favorites. When climbing a sport route which is a route that has bolts you will need quickdraws. Quickdraws are the item that you use to clip the rope into the bolt; I prefer Marmot or Black Diamond. After acquiring all these supplies you can be safe and have fun. Climb on!
