A Day To Stay In Bed

Everyone knows the struggle of waking up in the morning before school, it is always too early to function. On January 3rd, you get a rare opportunity to join your community and sleep through the day. National Festival of Sleep Day is devoted to nothing but sleeping in and taking naps. All you have to do during this special holiday is get caught up on sleep that you have lost stressing out through the school week. Some cities and towns, have school on the third, but most are still on Winter/Christmas break. Fortunately for Pendleton, our school district resumes school January 5th, that means the citizens of Pendleton get to participate in this strange and spectacular day.  On this day I will be sleeping in and pushing the snooze button because like others who need more sleep, I most likely be tired from the holidays.

Of course its great to get the opportunity to sleep in, you always feel so refreshed and renewed once you wake up. There are also benefits that can help you in school as well, for instance, consolidation is a process where you “practice” skills you learned when you weren’t catching some Z’s. Your mind goes over things you mastered while awake and you seem to know the concept better when you wake up. If you learned a math trick or new vocabulary at school, your mind will rehearse it while you sleep. So once you are finished with homework, take a nap to ensure you know the material well.

Being since January third is the beginning of a new year, and Christmas and New Years is over, it gives you time to get a good rest from the holidays. Everyone is so busy at this time of year and the Festival Of Sleep Day can help unwind from a crazy December. Considering Festival Of Sleep Day helps you relax, get the rare opportunity to sleep in, can improve memory and schoolwork, and helps you calm down from the holiday season, it is hard to think of a reason to not participate.
