Bullying is when you use superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force him or her to do what one wants. Bullying is when someone picks on you for what you wear or who you are, or sometimes they just do it for fun, or sometimes they have problems in their lives and want to take it out on someone else. A guy in 8th grade was picked on because of his race, and was repeatedly called names and labeled as someone who he wasn’t. I believe one of the biggest problems facing SMS students today is bullying, because people are being picked on for little things, like how they dress or the way they look. Being the victim to bullying can leave you feeling unsure about yourself, and makes you question yourself. No one has found the perfect solution to stop bullying permanently, but people who can help out are bystanders, and teachers. We need to learn to stand up for ourselves and fight bullying. Kids who are bullies need to be supervised or talk about it, and learn the consequences of bullying.
Bullying can’t be stopped completely, but can be prevented. One solution I think would help about bullying is learning the outcome of bullying. For example, if a person makes fun of another person, they should be sent to ISD or get in trouble so they don’t do it again. They should have their privileges taken away so they can learn the results of their own actions. Juan Ortega, a 6th grader, says that, “I think they should be supervised if there being bullies so they don’t do it again.”
Another solution that would help bullying is talking about it. If we could have discussions, and talk about how we feel and know why bullies are bullying, we could help prevent it. Having discussions about can sometimes do more harm than good, and sometimes it does more good than harm, but maybe just talking about how we feel about the situation will give us more ways to find better solutions to this problem. Perla Ortega, says, “maybe having discussions about it like assemblies would help. Bystanders and teachers could help with the solution. We could hang up flyers and let people know about bullying.”
Bullying is serious problem that needs to be stopped. It makes people feel bad about themselves and causes stress and other problems. Some people think that bullying isn’t that serious because they haven’t been bullied, but it is a big issue. It makes people feel weak emotionally and physically, and those kinds of things stay with them throughout their lives. I think that to stop bullying, we need to get more people to feel the same way. Teachers, bystanders, victims, and bullies need to be aware of the things going on around them. If people can stand up to bullying, kids will feel like school is a safe environment, and they could actually enjoy coming to school without worrying if they are going to be made fun of. They can wear whatever they want and not worry about who is going to make fun of them. Sunridge Middle School can be a good place if we put our minds to it and become more aware of bullying, and finally learn how to fight against it.
