The rivers name in Hebrew is Yarden and means to descend or flow down.  There was some influence from the Germanic name Jordanes borne by a 6th century historian. The name started to fade away after the middle ages but started to revive in the 19th century. In America and other countries it became popular in the 20th century. Today the name Jordan in the U.S. is ranked number 46 for the boys and number 196 for the girls. This name is mostly claimed by boys with with ranking 62 in Canada, 63 in Australia,165 in France, and 374 in the Netherlands. One famous person of this name was Michael Jordan who helped gain this name some popularity. This name has 28 variant forms that come from several different languages. So as you can see, Jordan is not just a brand of shoes or the last name of a famous basketball player, it is a name that comes from ancient Hebrew and has been around for several years.
