School Uniforms?

In response to Jacob Dickerson’s article on school uniforms, I would have to disagree with your statements. If schools endorsed uniforms, some student would refuse to wear them, not only because they are ugly but because they would know what’s best for them and they know they have their own rights. It’s better to be and look different than being the same. Wearing your own clothes help define how people feel or feel or who they are. Some people like to wear dark clothes and others like to wear bright colorful clothes. Parents already tell their kids what to wear and what not to wear; we don’t need the school too. Students have a right to wear whatever they want.

The Eiffel Tower is a beautiful structure located in Paris, France. The Eiffel Tower was named after Gustave Eiffel who also designed and constructed. The construction started on January 28, 1887 and completed on March 31, 1889. When the tower finished, it was at the height of 1,063 ft. It was made of iron and weighs around 10,000 tons. It took about 25 teams of people to paint 50 tons of paint to the Eiffel Tower to protect it from rust. The french name for Eiffel Tower is La Tour Eiffel, and is nicknamed La dame de fer which means the iron lady. The Eiffel Tower was built for the World’s Fair to demonstrate that iron could be as heavy as stone, but lighter at the same time. You can see around 37 miles from the top of the Eiffel Tower. I hope to go to Paris one day and see the Eiffel Tower.

DEAR ABBY, FROM MATT

I recently read an article by Abby that I agreed to immensely. Abby’s article about school year-round was not only convincing, but it challenged me to think about the subject. We would forget the curriculum less often. School year-round can help our education flourish in a fraction of the time it would take to learn in a regular school. Who doesn’t want to be out of school earlier? Would it worry me that we only get a few short breaks a year? This would probably be a pain at first, but in the long run, this would benefit everyone. Parents could get children out of the house sooner, and children wouldn’t have to deal with immaturity as long. A few continuous years of schooling, then a lifetime of freedom! I’m not worried about usual summertime activities, I will have plenty of time to adventure after schooling as well. I could travel to Paris, France (my dream vacation) after schooling, and I would most likely only be about 20-30!

Once upon a time in a faraway land, there was a hairy unicorn, but that is another story. In OUR faraway land, love was abundant, and heartbreak was impossible. Everyone was married at fifteen. Rafeal, the Spanish-speaking prince, and Abby ,the maid, were deeply in love. They were married with one girl child named Roberto. What they didn’t know is that the happy couple would invent the first heartbreak and end the world. Rafeal was a fat, lazy man. Abby was a self-absorbed jerk, and Roberto was a spoiled brat. One day, as they were eating their pet rock, named Jenna, the happy couple got into a fight about who got the last bite. As Abby walked away with a huff, a gong sounded somewhere in the village next to their mansion. The village was named Doomtown. The next day the couple got in a fight about hair color. They fought everyday, each fight getting more ridiculous than the last. Finally, Abby screamed at Rafeal, “I HATE YOU!” . The space-time continuum was ripped as soon as they created the first heartbreak.The gong sounded once again, but this time it wouldn’t stop banging for three days. On the fourth day, there was a rumbling in the planet as it started to split into pieces. People were in hysterics, running away from huge gaping holes, and giant lasers from alien ships. Abby and Rafeal clung to each other in the final moments of their life, and the final moments of their planet, with a healed relationship.

“I hope he didn’t.” I said all sadly. Natalie look at me like she’s confused.
“Why not? You guys been dating for a year now. It’s your guys anniversary.”
“I know, it’s just I didn’t know what to get him so I made a homemade card telling him my feelings for him.”
“Let me read it” said Natalie.
“Okay, but it’s going to be terrible.”
I handed Natalie the the heart shaped card and watched her read it. I started to get nervous.
“Oh my gosh Madison, this is so good! I love it! It’s so romantic” she said jokingly.
“Haha. I hope he likes it and I hope he didn’t get me something big and expensive.”
The day went on and I haven’t seen Liam all day. I started to get sad on the inside.
The bell rang  to tell us it was time to go to seventh period and when I walked into class guess who I saw, Liam! The moment I saw into those brown eyes, my heart started to beat.
“Liam, you're here.” I said giving him a smile.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t here earlier, I had to run out of town with my parents to pick up our new dog we have.”
“Oh. That’s cool.” I have a...” all of a sudden the bell rang. We had to go sit down before the teacher marked us tardy. Class went on and I couldn’t stop staring at Liam, he was just the greatest. While I was daydreaming about Liam, the teacher called my name.
"Madison, what is the long bone in the human leg?”
All of a sudden I said “Liam” out loud and the whole class started to laugh. It was so embarrassing. The bell rang it was time to go. I walked up to Liam, he said “I’m sorry I have to go or I will be late. See you after school.” I said “Okay, see yeah” and walked to class. It was the final bell and it was time to go home. I went to Liam’s locker and he was putting his stuff in his backpack. I walked up and I gave him the card. I started to get nervous. “What is this beautiful?”
“I made you card for Valentines day. I didn’t know what to get you so I made a card.”
“ Aww, thanks, I love it.”
“Your welcome.” I said in a smile.
“Hold on” he said. He pulls out  a card that looks just like mine. I was so shocked. “You made a card too!” I said.
“ Yeah, I also didn’t know what to get you so I made a card.”
“Aww, thank you.”
“No problem” He smiled back. I went and I gave him a hug. After that, we both went home and didn’t see each other till the next day. This was the greatest day ever and I know I will always have it in my heart.

Valentines Day Cake Mix Cookies

I picked this particular recipe because I’ve been making these cookies since I was little. It’s an old family recipe that I have no idea of it’s origin. All I know is that it’s cheap, easy, fast, and  amazingly delicious.

    Cake Mix Cookies
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
1 box of red velvet cake mix
½ cup of vegetable oil or its substitute
2 eggs
1 cup of chocolate chips- any kind
Mix together- about 2 min.
Once mixed, put about 1½ inches apart on an oiled pan
Bake for 9-12 minutes
Once out of the oven, let them cool for about 3 min.
Enjoy!
Note: If you double the recipe, use one box of vanilla cake mix and one box of the desired flavor     
         of cake mix.

    I would recommend this recipe for any occasion. All you have to do is change the flavor of cake mix. Its inexpensive, simple, easy, and delicious. Its made with ingredients found in any common household, so you won’t have any problems there. These cookies won’t even last a day in your kitchen.

We have the right to protect ourselves

In response to Sierra’s article, “Gun Ban Plan”, I have to say I agree completely with what she says. Guns should be used wisely, but we need to be able to protect ourselves from those who choose to use them in a bad way. Guns should not be limited to just policemen and other government workers. A man by the name of Adolf Hitler tried to ban guns. Look how well that worked for them. Do we really want that for ourselves? For the protection of our world, I hope guns are never banned.

Insulting Warning Labels

      Laws, labels, and directions are put in place to keep us safe. They are helpful in our daily lives to speed things up, and give us less trips to the hospital. However, some warning labels go a bit too far and don’t even allow us the use of good old common sense. Such as, the warning label on an air conditioner says: Caution, avoid dropping air conditioner out of windows. Or, an iron’s warning label reads: Warning, never iron clothes on the body. Warnings like this are unnecessary and just plain annoying. Some go even farther to say things like, on a bottle of toilet cleaner, the warning label says: Safe to use around pets and children, although it is not recommended that either be permitted to drink from the toilet. Some strollers have illustrations that depict the message: don’t shut your children in this stroller. Such warnings are an insult to Americans everywhere. That is why we must put an end to them.

            February 14 is the special day of the year where you give someone special flowers, cards, chocolates, and other gifts. This day of course is valentines day also called feast of Saint Valentine. So how did this day start? The history of Valentines Day and the story of its patron saint is still a mystery. The holiday contains both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. Some people believe Valentines Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial, while others believe the Christian church decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to the Roman god of Agriculture. It wasn't till the 5th century when pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentines Day. It wasn't until much later that it became associated with love. it was commonly believed that February 14 was the beginning of birds mating season which added to the idea Valentines should be for romance. Valentines day is celebrated in the United States, Mexico, Canada, The United Kingdom, France, and Australia. The first valentines gifts were hand written notes, but by the 1900’s printed cards began to replace written letters. Today one billion Valentines Day cards are sent each year making this day the second largest card sending holiday. Women purchase 85 percent of all Valentines. Red and pink represent Valentines day because these colors represent passion, energy, and deep love. In conclusion, Valentines day was first a day to celebrate agriculture with the feast of Lupercalia but later became a day to celebrate love. This day is also a combination of Roman and Christian tradition. So on February 14th, remember to celebrate a tradition of celebration and love that has been going for thousands of years.

         Every February 14, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of Valentine’s day. People generally think of jewelry, candy, the colors red and pink, ect. But now one really thinks about the question that has been lingering in my mind, how did this all get started?  It is said that there was an emperor named 'Claudius' who believed that after marriage people would become physically and mentally unfit. So, he ordered his soldiers not to marry. This statement startled a priest named "Valentine" when he heard about this. He requested those soldiers to marry. When the emperor came to know about this, he at once called the priest to have him hung. From that day on people started celebrating this day as ‘Valentine’s Day’ otherwise known as the day of love.

   In a world where you’re controlled by snitchy little fingers and you're nothing more than an animation on a computer screen; there is a small town called Pleasant View. Where everyone knows everyone. In that small town there is a small street. And on that small street there is a house. And inside that house there is a family. And inside that family, there is Vladimir. A brilliant young teenager full of big ambitions and his only dream is to find love. His mother and father are all about simillions, and only wished Vladimir the best in life. Although in the back of their mind, they planned on something different for him. They wanted him to be the best of the best in the medical career. All of Vladimir's virtual life; he has been told not to do anything but study. But now that he has gotten older girls have been on his mind. Yea, thanks puberty. Anyway: back to Vladimir.

    On his way to Led’s gym one Sunday afternoon, he spotted this lady. Who he later found out was named Sally. With dashing red hair, and a rather provocative blue dress. But that’s not what caught Vladimir’s eye. What made him look twice was her red hair. Vladimir always had a thing for red hair. Being the daring man he was, Vladimir decided to approach Sally. Making his way over to her, he came up with a few things to say: “Why hello, love!” he thought, but soon wiped the idea out of his head. “No. that’s too mushy.” he said to himself. “Yo, you lookin fine!” “Naw. Too jerk-like.” Getting closer Vladimir started to panic but managed to say something off the top of his head “Are you from Tennessee? Cause you’re the only ten I see.” A long pause, and a moment of silence came over the two. His heart started pounding, the palms of his hands began to get sweaty, and his breathing deepened. Sally was taken away by Vladimir’s gesture, but not so much in a bad way.

    After hours of meaningful conversation, in the midst of cheesy pickup lines, on the corner of Led’s gym, on a small street, in Pleasant View, on a computer screen, Sally and Vladimir fell in love. They soon bought a beautiful home, and had three kids.. From that day on, Vladimir made a pledge to himself. To not follow the footsteps of his ancestors and study books, but to study the body of his wife and find true happiness in life. Yea... Thanks puberty.

Upcoming School Changes

In the article titled “Upcoming school changes not for the best” by River Engum, I agree that the Pendleton School Board would be making a bad decision if the option presented is voted in. It will create major issues in the future of our school district. The idea of making Hawthorne the all kindergarten school would make nearly every parent in the district worried and overstretched if they have multiple children in multiple schools. Also in turn making West Hills the Alternative school would make it harder for the district to manage the transportation of students from homes on the North Hill to various schools around the district.

The Sloth

The three toed sloth, hanging around in the tree tops

The sloth is the worlds slowest mammal, so slow that algae grows on their fur coat. The algae is used for camouflage in the dense rain forest tree tops. There is two genres of sloth, two toed and three toed, but all sloths have long claws at the end of each hand. The exciting life of the sloth is mostly spent in the tree tops, hanging around with the assist of their extremely strong grip and their long claws. Dead sloths have been known to remain hanging from tree branches for a few days before falling. Sloths spend 18-20 hours of their action filled days sleeping. Even when they are awake they don’t move much, only to eat leaves and fruit. Sloths even mate and give birth in trees, baby sloths cling to their mothers backs for the first nine months of their lives. When a sloth is on land, its weak hind legs are basically useless, so they pull their bodies across the ground with their arms and claws. I think that would be hilarious to watch. Surprisingly, sloths are very skilled swimmers, using their long arms to paddle themselves along. Sometimes they drop directly from their tree perches to rivers to avoid predators. In the neck of a sloth, there is extra vertebrae, enabling them to turn their heads about 270 degrees. So next time you’re in a jungle, keep an eye out for the sloth!

Bullies are Not Cool

Stacy Fitzpatrick’s article, titled “Bullies” is a great piece of work. Stacy makes some good points about bullying and I agree with her that it has to be stopped. Although I did feel like she could have gone into more detail about what a bully actually is. Bullying is the use of force to abuse or intimidate others.and what you can do if you are getting bullied. A couple of strategies to stop a bully is to tell an adult, or stand up to him/her.  Also, I feel like the article could have gained some greater meaning if she had added in a scenario in the beginning. Overall, Stacy did a very good job and I am proud of her.

      What has 3 syllables, 8 letters, and 4 vowels? That's right, it's my name Annalise. the origin of the name Annalise is Hebrew. In Hebrew, Annalise means graced with God's bounty. They say people with this name have a deep inner need to find the full truth and enjoy life immensely. Most people don't have a story behind their name, but I do. I am named after my grandma on my mom's side of the family, whose name was Anna. My grandma passed away before I was born so I never had the chance to meet her or see what she looked like. But I always have the sweet memory everytime I hear my name; I think of my grandma. My middle name: Marie,  came from my other grandma who is still alive to this day. Annalise is not a very common name, but it is my name and I love it.

Six Strange Superstitions

    Ever since we were little kids we have heard of superstitions, the main ones being, if a black cat crosses your path you will have bad luck and if you break a mirror you will have ten years bad luck. Being children, we would have instantly believed these superstitions told to us by our parents, until one of them occurred and we realized... nothing happened. Now, we just look back on those days and laugh at how ridiculous those superstitions were. Because it is always interesting to learn about strange superstitions, I have provided six more you may not have heard of as well as their origins.

1. Stay Forever Young by Carrying an Acorn - In Ancient Britain, it was believed that because the oak tree was thought to provide longevity, if you kept an acorn in your pocket you would stay looking young.

2. Tuck Your Thumbs in When Passing a Graveyard - In Japan, the thumb is known as the “parent-finger” so when passing a graveyard hiding your thumbs means you are protecting your parents from death.

3. Don’t Praise Babies in China - In China, it is believed that if you praise a baby it will attract the attention of ghosts and demons, which of course means bad luck.

4. Don’t Chew Gum at Night - In Turkey, it is believed that if you are chewing gum at night, you are actually chewing the flesh of the dead.

5. An Awkward Silence Means an Angel is Passing Over - This superstition is dedicated to Dylan Thomas, who wrote in Portrait of the Artist a line that says ‘a host of angels must be passing by ...What a silence there is!’. Meaning, that the cause for such a silence must be an angel passing by.

6. If a Bird Defecates on Your House, You’ll be Rich - In Russia, if a bird defecates on you or your property it’s a sign of good luck, and may cause you to become very wealthy.

     Don’t know what to get your special someone for Valentines Day? Well, here’s some helpful tips on what not to get them. First off, guys, the number one gift you don’t want to get a girl is clothes. You could easily mistake her size and get her something way too large, resulting in her thinking she’s fat.
