An alternate punishment would be life without parole. In the last ten years, the average cost of defending the death penalty in Oregon was $438,651, and the average cost of defending a non-death aggravated murder case was only $216,693. It cost way more to execute a person than to give them a life sentence in prison. Many homicide victim’s family members say that the execution of the murderer would not end their pain. The money spent on execution could go to the victim’s families instead.
As of 2008 the longest-serving prisoner awaiting his execution date is Gary Alvord. He waited for exactly 43 years before passing away from a brain tumor. The reason for him waiting so long were the expenses. Even if prisoners don’t wait years to be executed, it takes at least 14 minutes for the lethal injection to kick in. In my opinion, if the death penalty is not banned then there should at least be a three year limit for somebody to wait. The death penalty is already banned in 18 states, why not the other 32? In conclusion, the government needs to weigh the pros and cons prior to sentencing capitol crimes.
