Why do we say bless you when someone sneezes? The answer lies in time past. People believed that our souls would escape every time we sneezed unless someone said, "Bless you!" They thought the devil could take over during this time, and blessing was the only way they could they get him out. Why do we call them piggy banks? Long ago, when America was just farmlands, people all had a pig if they wanted to prosper. The pig would eat all the trash, and save them money. If someone had a pig, they would say, "All my money's in the pig." So when pigs became outdated, people created a coin holder in the shape of a pig. How about 'piece of cake'? When slaves got a cake, (a rare occasion) they would have a game to determine who gets the cake. They would walk around the cake, and whoever looked the most graceful would win the cake. Both 'cake walk' and 'piece of cake' came from this. One more. 'Don't cry over spilled milk'? That comes from superstition. It is said that if you spill milk, you must leave it for the house sprites to drink, and you would have good luck. If the spiller didn't like the waste of milk, the sprites would cause bad luck to those inside the house.
