Dear How To Help

Dear NNN,
In the past, all of my summers have consisted of lazy days in front of the TV and hanging out with friends at the local swimming pool. But I want this summer to be different. Lately I’ve realized how easy I have it in life, and with school out of the way I would like to focus some of my time on helping those who aren’t as fortunate. The only problem is that I have no idea where to start, or what kind of thing I would enjoy. Could you help point me in the right direction?

Dear How To Help,
First off, I think it’s great that you have decided to help out the community this summer, most students wouldn’t even give it a second thought. While it may not seem like it, there are various ways in which you can help those around you. First, if you are an indoors type of person, you could simply donate some of your time to read to the elderly or help with chores that need to be done where they live. Also, you could donate blood or get a group of your friends together to donate old clothes, blankets, or can goods to those who need it. If you are the more athletic type, you can participate in events supporting cancer awareness, help pick up trash on a highway, or start a fundraiser to donate money to a local hospital or shelter. All these things, no matter how small, help everyday people get through life a little easier, and performing these tasks will give you the satisfaction in helping others that you desire this summer. And remember, it doesn’t matter if the world can’t see the difference you’re making, all that matters is that you can see the difference you’re making and how many lives you’ll change for the better.
