The History of St. Patrick
St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, has been celebrated for over 1,000 years. St. Patrick’s Day is a religious Irish holiday. This holiday was created in the honor of St. Patrick’s death. St. Patrick was born in Britain. His parents were wealthy. At the age of 16, St. Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s land. He was held captive in Ireland for 6 years. In his 6 years there, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from everyone else. After a while his lack of communicating and fear caused him to turn to his religion for solace. Once this was done he became a devout Christian. After 6 years in Ireland, St. Patrick had a dream. In his dream a voice spoke to him. It told him that it was time to leave Ireland. When St. Patrick awoke he went back to Britain. A while after St. Patrick arrived to Britain he had another dream, this time an angel spoke to him. The angel told him to go back to Ireland, but as a missionary. Once he awoke, he began a religious training that lasted for more than 15 years. When St. Patrick completed his training he left to Ireland and became a priest. St. Patrick died March 17, 461 A.D.
